Sly Boy Slying

I like making something have personality and interest with as few lines as possible. This seems to have hit the mark for me.

Today I present a girl electrified.
You decide what it is that is electrifying her and get back to me.

“If you do not tell the truth about yourself you cannot tell it about other people.” – Virginia Woolf
I don’t know if I believe this. I think many people can deceive themselves quite thoroughly about their real persona while at the same time having a laser focus on the truth about another person. They don’t make for the most trustworthy people in the world, but they can exist.

“If You Want To Be Someone Else, Then Change Your Mind.” – Sister Hazel
It is the easiest way, you know.

“There Was One Who Thought Himself Above Me, And He Was Above Me Until He Had That Thought.” – Elbert Hubbard
I am not sure about this anymore. It seems to have a ‘false modesty’ thing that you find in Christianity often. There is a ‘rule’ that you are suppose to not know of your own greatness or goodness, that if you do it is pride. I now disagree with that to some degree. I think it is good to know who you are. That doesn’t mean you are conceited, it means you see clearly. That also does not mean you aren’t going to be humble and appreciate others and who they are and how they compare to you. If they are better, then you admit that as well.

If not for spills, everything would be too easy, don’t you think?

“Edukashun iz importend cuz without it you is stuppid.” – me
I wrote this one so my daughters would realize that going to High School was worth it! haha…truth be told it is always easy to talk in generalities about smart vs stupid, but not very nice to get specific about it. However, it is true that many people, even those with degrees, really aren’t very well educated. They paid attention to only their narrowly focused interest and thought other areas weren’t worth paying attention to. They didn’t apply to their lives, in other words.
What really is happening in that case is the person is unknowingly setting themselves up to be ‘stupid’. ‘Stupid’ in this case I think of as being unaware of the larger world, whether it be history, geography, religion, science, art, politics, ideas or a thousand other topics. However, it is also obvious that none of us can know all there is to know, or even the surface of, all the topics available.
That isn’t the sin of ‘stupidity’. The sin is when you don’t attempt to learn anything, when you think you know it already, when you have no curiosity or interest in the world. That is the sin of ‘stupidity’ and it has consequences just as traditional ‘sins’ do.

“Time Is At Once The Most Valuable And The Most Perishable Of All Our Possessions.” John Randolph
Funny to have a young one saying this since they are the ones who usually are unaware that time
is so fleeting. Actually, I think there is a gene in humans that basically causes us to ignore the
reality of time and eventual death because after all, what are we really going to do about it
anyway, right?
Most people, in spite of Randy Rausch and his Last Lecture, in spite of all the repetition of the
cliche to live your life as if today is your last day, really don’t and don’t want to, live that way.
They want to live as they live for the most part. Of course I am talking about my world of middle
class America, not all people everywhere, though it might be true of them as well. I just can’t
assume that.

I agree and disagree with this. Do you?

“If You Make People Think They’re Thinking, They Will Love You. If You Make Them Think, They’ll Hate You.” – Don Marquis
This quote is particularly important for me. I have a long history within the christian church and I had to part ways intellectually with it, in many ways due to the truth behind this quote. The traditional christian church isn’t really interested in its congregants thinking freely. They want to give the illusion of thinking through ideas. But in the end they fully expect that the answer they supply will be accepted and further questions will be not be forthcoming.
I was not comfortable being a youth leader when I was basically not allowed to encourage the students to really think for themselves, especially considering I had daughters in the youth group. Luckily my daughters have all become thinkers in their own right, often leading the way for my progress in the world of ideas.
