“The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win you’re still a rat.” – Lily Tomlin
Of course, it could also be said that you would be a very fit and trim rat, having run in all those races.

“Time Is At Once The Most Valuable And The Most Perishable Of All Our Possessions.” John Randolph
Funny to have a young one saying this since they are the ones who usually are unaware that time
is so fleeting. Actually, I think there is a gene in humans that basically causes us to ignore the
reality of time and eventual death because after all, what are we really going to do about it
anyway, right?
Most people, in spite of Randy Rausch and his Last Lecture, in spite of all the repetition of the
cliche to live your life as if today is your last day, really don’t and don’t want to, live that way.
They want to live as they live for the most part. Of course I am talking about my world of middle
class America, not all people everywhere, though it might be true of them as well. I just can’t
assume that.

“Modern art is what happens when painters stop looking at girls and think they have a better idea.” – John Ciardi
A dated saying, with a bit of sexism, but it has the essence of truth to it. What do you think?

“All You Need In This Life Is Ignorance And Confidence, And Then Success Is Sure.”- Mark Twain
I take this to be a positive and a negative. Much success comes from the efforts of those who are too ignorant to realize they aren’t likely to make it. Because of that ignoring of the cards being stacked against them they actually overcome the odds and succeed.

“I Think The World Is Run By C Students.” – Al Mcguire
How scary is that! And it is true. Then again getting As on report cards isn’t exactly a sure sign of intelligence or ability, just as being able to successfully campaign for president doesn’t mean you will be a good president, as we have seen again and again over the decades.

“Everybody Talks About the Weather But Nobody Does Anything About It.” – Mark Twain
Maybe more now than in his day, eh?

“For myself I am an optimist – it does not seem to be much use being anything else.” – Winston Churchill
What’s the value in being anything else? What does it get you?

Me included.

“A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices.” – William James
I think this is true, and I think I am just as guilty as the next person.

“I probably shouldn’t smoke.”
Notice that these recent napkins are different than previous months? First off, I got a new scanner finally. Second, these are from very early in my drawing of them. Less ornate and detailed in the drawings.

“Faith is the Pencil Of The Soul That Pictures Heavenly Things.” – Thomas Burbridge
I agree and disagree with this. Do you?

“Time is Nature’s Way Of Keeping Everything From Happening At Once” – Woody Allen

“War is the Unfolding Of Miscalculations.” – Barbara Tuchman
Anyone who does not realize this is true should read the story of the beginning of World War I. Unbelievable miscalculations that ended up costing millions and millions of lives.

“Seriousness Is The Only Refuge Of The Shallow.” – Oscar Wilde
Good Ol’ Oscar Wilde, he is the greatest of quote meisters. No one has more pithy, funny and true statements than OW.
This one is especially true I think. Those who are always serious are actually just busy staying away from contemplation and true discovery.

“I look forward to an America which will not be afraid of grace and beauty.” – J.F.K.
Not only do I agree in this hope, I also hope that people will find that it is not shallow and is not trite. That the value of one’s life goes up when you are deliberate about these things. That you work to understand and develop art and dance and singing and appreciation of beauty in the myriad ways it can be experienced.
Grace is a manifestation of manners and of concern. You draw attention away from yourself, you don’t overreact, you don’t fly off the handle. You assume the best of people and, while not quite ignoring the worst, at least you downplay it and don’t feed it with your own reaction.

“Expect Poison From Standing Water.” – William Blake
Obviously Blake isn’t trying to warn people about bad water. He is trying to warn people about stagnation of the mind and soul. People naturally tend to settle down and stay in the same place. Does that mean we must also stand still with our thinking and our way of acting within our world?

Happy Fourth of July! Don’t eat each other, but you can eat a cow if you want. Or a potato. Or a
big bite of jalapeño and have fireworks in your mouth!

“It’s not what we don’t know that hurts, it’s what we know that ain’t so that does.” – Will Rogers
This is SO TRUE! Check out the ‘truth’ of beliefs from the past if you have any doubts. What do we believe in the present that might not be true? Religion? Science? What evidence do you have that what you believe really is true?

“A stitch in time would have confused Einstein.” – Anonymous
Nothing profound in this one except that silly nature of the universe stuff.

“Character is what you are in the dark.” – D. L. Moody
If this is the case, then what it really means is your thoughts are what decide your character, right? Hmmmm, not necessarily true now that I think about it. Because when you are alone you can still be taking action. You can do what you said you were going to do, even though no one is around at the time to see if you are going to do it. So, what it means is character isn’t what you feel compelled to do because others are watching, judging. It is what you want to do because it is right and good, promised and meant.
