Eating Is So Selfish!

“Eating is so selfish!”

What could be more selfish than that? It is the ultimate selfish act don’t you think?

I’m Not A Vegetarian Because I Love Animals; I’m A Vegetarian Because I Hate Plants

“I’m Not A Vegetarian Because I Love Animals; I’m A Vegetarian Because I Hate Plants.” – A. Whitney Brown

My daughter’s were all vegetarians during Jr. High and High School when I was drawing these napkins for them. I thought this would be a funny one for them to think about.

The Best Way To Secure Future Happiness Is to Be Happy Today

“The Best Way To Secure Future Happiness Is to Be Happy Today.” – Charles W. Eliot

If you doubt this then attempt, right now, to be happy in the future. It is impossible. You can ONLY be happy in the present since the future does not exist yet. You may be happy IMAGINING a future, but you are imagining it in the present.

You may say ‘I am not in happy circumstances right now’ or ‘If I had more money, or was in a good relationship or….yada yada yada…. The truth is you can have an attitude of happiness, even if it is out of commission for a short while due to circumstance (such as a death/injury in the family, not because your nail broke).

If you can’t find something to be happy about today, what makes you think you will find something to be happy about tomorrow?

I am an Atheist Still, Thank God

” I am an atheist still, thank God.” – Luis Buñuel

love this quote. It made me wonder, do you think dogs are atheists?

Edukashun iz Importend Cuz Without It You Is Stuppid

“Edukashun iz importend cuz without it you is stuppid.” – me

I wrote this one so my daughters would realize that going to High School was worth it! haha…truth be told it is always easy to talk in generalities about smart vs stupid, but not very nice to get specific about it. However, it is true that many people, even those with degrees, really aren’t very well educated. They paid attention to only their narrowly focused interest and thought other areas weren’t worth paying attention to. They didn’t apply to their lives, in other words.

What really is happening in that case is the person is unknowingly setting themselves up to be ‘stupid’. ‘Stupid’ in this case I think of as being unaware of the larger world, whether it be history, geography, religion, science, art, politics, ideas or a thousand other topics. However, it is also obvious that none of us can know all there is to know, or even the surface of, all the topics available.

That isn’t the sin of ‘stupidity’. The sin is when you don’t attempt to learn anything, when you think you know it already, when you have no curiosity or interest in the world. That is the sin of ‘stupidity’ and it has consequences just as traditional ‘sins’ do.

Never Date A Person You Can Hear Ticking

“Never Date A Person You Can Hear Ticking.” – Mark Patinkin

And there are SO many ways to find out if they are ticking, but you have to pay attention.

I Have A Simple Philosophy

“I have a simple philosophy. Fill what’s empty, empty what’s full, scratch where it itches.” – Alice Roosevelt Longworth

I don’t adhere to an organized religious version of this philosophy, but if I did I would want to be the cult leader, not the follower. I do follow this philosophy in gardening and landscaping however.

The Trouble with the Rat Race Is That Even If You Win You’re Still A Rat

“The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win you’re still a rat.” – Lily Tomlin

Of course, it could also be said that you would be a very fit and trim rat, having run in all those races.

Time Is At Once The Most Valuable And The Most Perishable Of All Our Possessions

“Time Is At Once The Most Valuable And The Most Perishable Of All Our Possessions.” John Randolph

Funny to have a young one saying this since they are the ones who usually are unaware that time
is so fleeting. Actually, I think there is a gene in humans that basically causes us to ignore the
reality of time and eventual death because after all, what are we really going to do about it
anyway, right?

Most people, in spite of Randy Rausch and his Last Lecture, in spite of all the repetition of the
cliche to live your life as if today is your last day, really don’t and don’t want to, live that way.
They want to live as they live for the most part. Of course I am talking about my world of middle
class America, not all people everywhere, though it might be true of them as well. I just can’t
assume that.
